In 2023, International Paper experienced an 8.6% increase in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, primarily due to increased sales of renewable energy certificates (RECs), which do not reflect a change in actual emissions. Scope 3 emissions decreased by 6.2% due to lowered consumption and production, with improved industry-level emission factors. Despite economic challenges affecting production volume and costs, emissions reductions were achieved at some sites, such as the containerboard mill in Rome, Georgia, and a project was announced to reduce emissions at the Cedar Rapids, Iowa mill. Reduced biomass fuel use offset some project-related GHG decreases.
