  • Eastern Company SAE (Egyptian state-controlled tobacco monopoly, nationalized 1956 under Nasser, ~55-70% domestic cigarette market share via the Cleopatra brand) faced the secretive November 2023 privatization in which the Egyptian government — under IMF pressure to divest state assets amid an acute foreign-currency crisis — sold its controlling stake to Global Investment Holding (UAE-affiliated, linked to PMI business partner Abdullah Al Hussaini) for USD 530 million plus USD 95 million in instalments, leaving the Egyptian state a minority shareholder and drawing criticism that the price was paltry relative to Eastern's value.
