- The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered the bank in July 2022 to pay a $37.5 million penalty after finding that, under salesgoal pressure, its employees accessed consumers' credit reports and opened deposit accounts, credit cards and lines of credit without customers' knowledge or consent over a period of years, conduct similar to the Wells Fargo fakeaccounts scandal.
