VERBUND aims to accelerate profitable growth in electricity generation from wind and solar power, with new renewables expected to account for around 20–25% of total generation by 2030. As of 31 December 2023, renewables accounted for around 5% of total generation. The increase in total revenue and EBITDA in 2023 was largely due to higher average electricity prices and increased generation volumes, particularly from the commissioning of part of the renewables portfolio acquired in the previous year and the acquisition of wind farms in Spain. The new renewables coefficient was 1.06 in 2023, up from 0.96 in 2022.
