Progress against targets

Union Pacific has made progress towards its 2030 target by reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 19.1% from the 2018 baseline as of 2023. The company has also achieved a 12.1% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions, including a 21.9% cumulative absolute reduction in Scope 3 fuel- and energy-related activities. Additionally, Union Pacific has increased its utilization of biofuels, reaching a 6.1% average utilization in 2023, up from 4.5% in 2022. The company is actively collaborating with other Class I railroads and domestic locomotive manufacturers to test and approve the use of biofuels, with ongoing pilot studies expected to last until the end of 2025.
